HOW TO PREPARE BINALAYOK: PANGAKO SA’YO INSPIRED, GAYUMA RECIPE.

If you have been watching Pangako Sa’yo remake featuring the characters of Amor Powers and Claudia Salameda, you might be wondering what is “binalayok” and how it is being cooked.  I have the same question so I did my own research for me to be able to share to you how this binalayok is prepared.

Jodi Santa Maria portraying the character of Amor who made binalayok famous.

This is how binalayok looks like as captured from our television.

Based on my research, here are the things that you need to have to be able to come up with this mouth watering delicacy.

Ingredients:

1) 2 plates made out of clay, 1 big and 1 small.

SInce we don't have a clay pot, a chinaware will do. Make sure lang that the chinaware will fit in your oven.

2.  A COCONUT LAMP

IMG_0760
This will add to the warmth of the room as you prepare your binalayok. Remember, dapat 27 degrees ang temperature ng room while you are cooking this, otherwise hindi ma-aachieve ang taste na nakakabaliw.
Turn the lamp on to achieve the desired temperature and for proper lighting effects. Moreover, it will also set a peaceful ambiance while you prepare the binalayok. Preparing a binalayok is not just being done to fill hungry stomachs. According to history, this is also made to calm ones soul.

3) BIGAS

Kailangang piling piling butil ng bigas ang gamitin sa pagawa ng binalayok. HIndi pwede ang dinurado, jasmine or burdagol. Look for a scented one na galing Japan so that you will achieve the stickiness required.

4) MARTILYO

Martilyo sana pero kung wala kayo nun pwede narin ang batong panghilod. Just make sure na wala kayong residue ng libag diyan para walang added unnecessary saltiness sa inyong finished product.

5) YELLOW BANANA

IMG_0792
Preferred ang yellow na saging dahil kung itim na ito ay malamang bulok na siya so choose something fresh. Don’t use kambal na saging dahil magiging iba ang lasa nito. Dapat ung walang kakambal sa uma.

6) TURMERIC POWDER or also known as rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family.

IMG_0793
According to wikipedia, this is a native in southwest India, and needs temperatures between 20 and 30 °C and a considerable amount of annual rainfall to thrive. This specific ingredient will add spice to the binalayok. Use only 1 pinch of the turmeric powder.  Please only look for the turmeric that grew in soutwest india, in case from southeast india ang turmeric na gamit mo, medyo iba ang lasa.

7) Hazelnuts

Hazel nuts will add to the peanuty aroma of the delicacy. Choose only the skinless hazel nuts.
Accroding din to wikipedia Hazelnut is the nut of the hazel and therefore includes any of the nuts deriving from species of the genus Corylus, especially the nuts of the species Corylus avellana. It is also known as cobnut or filbert nut according to species. Grabe naman, siyempre nut siya ng hazel diba kasi hazelnut nga. Anyways, Hazelnuts will add to the amazing aroma of the delicacy. Choose only the skinless hazelnuts.  Do not use peanuts because peanuts is not a nut of a hazel so the taste may vary.

8) COCOA SOLIDS OR POWDER

Be sure that the cocoa powder that you will use is extracted from a wild cacao.
Wiki said Cocoa solids are a mixture of many substances remaining after cocoa butter is extracted from cacao beans. When sold as an end product, it may also be called cocoa powder, cocoa, and cacao. Ahhh. What if sold siya as beginning product? Will it be called any different?

After preparing all the necessary ingredients:

Ilagay ito sa loob ng oven.  Siguraduhing sa loob ito ng oven ilagay at siguraduhing may oven kayo bago niyo simulan ang paggawa ng binalayok baka kasi marealize niyo in the end na wala pala kayong oven so sayang lang ang preparation niyo ng mga ingredients.
IMG_0821
Wait for 5 short minutes.
IMG_0824
Carefully bring it out from the oven. Use pot holders because this one is really really hot.

Before you can enjoy the hot and sticky binalayok, you need to use a hammer to break the clay plate.

IMG_0516

In our case e batong panghilod.

IMG_0832

Mahal ang chinaware so I won’t be breaking it, I changed my mind. I will just dramatically remove the top clay plate and let’s see what we have here:

IMG_0838
Close your eyes.
IMG_0842
Viola!
IMG_0846
OMG, yummy and delightful to the eyes.  The crunchiness of the banana gave it a different twist.  The cocoa on rice reminded me of my childhood when I used to eat rice with Milo.  This is a hit to my palate!  This is life changing. Now I understand why Eduardo fell in love with Amor.  Now I know.

Try the binalayok recipe and have someone who doesn’t love you love you back.  It’s actually a gayuma recipe!  Share the love, share this recipe.

Have a great day!

How much should my ex-partner give as financial support?

grabbed from rolling out.com
grabbed from rolling out.com

Dear Kuya D.

My name is Amelita Orpiano from Tarlac, just call me Amor for short. I have a partner for ten (10) years but we are not married. We have a five (5) year old child out of the said relationship. However, two (2) years ago, we decided to part ways due to irreconcilable differences. Since then, he’s been giving my child and I a monthly financial support of TEN THOUSAND PESOS (P10,000.00).

Recently, I learned that my ex-partner Eduardo, already got married to a girl named Claudia who just gave birth yesterday. Eduardo called me and said that our monthly support will now be reduced to FIVE THOUSAND PESOS (P5,000.00). I screamed NOOOOOOOOO! But he insisted because according to him, he now has another child and a wife to support.

I have a plan. I wanted to enter into an agreement with him regarding our monthly support and that I wanted for it to remain TEN THOUSAND PESOS (P10,000.00). What should I do? Please tell me!

Dear Amor,

Kalma lang po. Reading your story, let me answer the following questions for you:

  • Are you entitled for support from your ex-partner?
  • Is your child entitled for support?
  • Can he reduce the current monthly TEN THOUSAND PESOS (P10,000.00) financial support that you are receiving from him?
  • Can you enter into agreement for it to remain TEN THOUSAND PESOS (P10,000.00)?
  • Does the law provide for a fixed amount of support?

Let me discuss to you what support is.

What is support?

Support comprises everything indispensable for sustenance, dwelling, clothing, medical attendance, education and transportation in keeping with the financial capacity of the family. (Art. 194, Family Code)

1) Are you entitled for support from your ex-partner?

I’m sorry to say but “You” are not entitled for support from your ex-partner. The law provides under Article 195 of the Family Code that only:

  • Spouses;
  • Legitimate ascendants and descendants;
  • Parents and their legitimate children and the legitimate and illegitimate children of the latter; and
  • Legitimate brothers and sisters, whether of the full of half-blood. (Art. 195, Family Code)

are obliged to support each other. Considering that you are not the spouse, your ex-partner is not obliged to support you.

2) Is your child entitled for support?

Definitely, your child is entitled for support and that is also based on Article 195 of the Family Code as provided above.

3) Can he reduce the current monthly TEN THOUSAND PESOS (P10,000.00) financial support that you are receiving from him?

Yes. The law provides that support shall be increased or reduced proportionately, according to the increase/or reduction of necessities of the recipient and the resources or means of the person obliged. (Art. 202, Family Code)

Since you mentioned that Claudia, Eduardo’s wife just gave birth then it is understood that the resources of your ex-partner will now be divided in accordance to the needs of his family and his child with you.  Thus, the TEN THOUSAND PESOS (P10,000.00) monthly support that your child is receiving may be reduced.  Of course, it will be a different story if your ex-partner’s salary allows or makes it possible for the P10,000.00 monthly support to be maintained.

4) Can you enter into agreement for it to remain TEN THOUSAND PESOS (P10,000.00)?

Yes. You can always enter into an agreement for the financial support to remain TEN THOUSAND PESOS (P10,000.00) but remember that there is a provision that says that support can also be increased or reduced depending on the resources or means of the person obliged.

So, even if you have a written agreement that the monthly support shall be TEN THOUSAND PESOS (P10,000.00) but the salary of the person obliged to support is, for instance, TWENTY THOUSAND PESOS (20,000.00) and he is also supporting a wife and a child, then it wouldn’t be fair that you will be getting half of his salary.

5) Does the law provide for a fixed amount of support?

No. It shall be in proportion to the resources or means of the giver and to the necessities of the recipient. (Art. 201, Family Code)

PRACTICAL ADVICE:

Sit down with your ex-partner and show him a breakdown of the needs of your child. It will be a better approach that way rather than insisting for a fixed amount with the other party wondering if the said amount is being spent properly. The normal tendency of the support giver is to think that you are not spending everything for your child and that you are using the money for other purposes. So the best solution is to back up your demand with some details.

Also, it is for the best interest of your child that you remain friends with your ex-partner so that it will not be heavy on his heart to be handing you your child’s financial support. It is true that the money goes to his child and he shouldn’t be complaining but it will still be different if the person managing his child’s money accepts it with a smile. Besides, you have both decided to separate ways so just maintain a friendly relationship for you and your child’s sake.

I hope I was able to help you with your concern Amor. If you have some clarifications, just drop a personal message on my facebook page and remember that the above advise is only based on the story you have provided.  Meanwhile, if you want to be relieved from stress, read some of my articles under HUMOR category.

Thank you very much and wishing you good life ahead. 🙂

WHY YOU SHOULD NOT SHARE YOUR RICHES TO PEOPLE.

(grabbed from comments yard.com)
(grabbed from comments yard.com)

Everyday we encounter people who have lost their love for life. You can hear them say “I am good for nothing” or “I just don’t know what my real purpose in life is”.

Haven’t you realized that it is not actually an accident that these people are venting their frustrations to us. If you are that type of person whom people just want to sit with and talk to, you can use this opportunity to build these people and make them realize that life is worth living.

In the book that I am currently reading, I found this powerful line – The greatest good we can do for others is not to share our riches with them, but reveal their riches to them.

All of us have hidden potentials, if we can’t find it, we just need a “potential hunter” to help us discover it and make us shine. You can be that “potential hunter” that your friend needs today!

Don’t forget to remind your friend what the bible says: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. – Philippians 4:13

SAVE TIME, PLAN YOUR DAY AHEAD.

Direction literally creates time. – Zig Ziglar (Photo belongs to http://www.dexterdiwas.com)

Most of the time, I end the day frustrated because I was not able to accomplish much.  Then I realized that one of the reasons why we end up being unproductive is that we go to work without planning our day.  Many experts and successful people have always been sharing that one of their secrets to being efficient is to have a “to do list” every single day in order to save time.

It doesn’t take much to find the high road to success, but to reach it you need an agenda for the present.  You need directions for today.  You need a purpose. Listen to the advice the president of Lincoln University gave to a group of incoming freshmen:  “Your life can’t go according to plan if you have no plan!” – Zig Ziglar

True indeed.  Having direction, purpose or agenda for the day will literally save us much time. So write down what you have to do today and accomplish them with delight and glee!

Remember:  The steps of good men are directed by the Lord.  He delights in each step they take. – Psalm 37:23.

SO, YOU THINK YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL OR HANDSOME?

Start the day by affirming and appreciating something about your spouse, child, neighbor, work mate or just a random person whom you think need some confidence boosting. A dose of affirmation and appreciation goes a long way and all the more if it comes from a person you love.

So, instead of destructively criticizing? Affirm and Appreciate and make the world a better place.

Remember: As long as you keep a person down, some part of you has to be down there to hold him down, so it means you cannot soar as you otherwise might. – Marian Anderson.

So if my wife didn’t wake up early to affirm and appreciate me, I remind myself this:

Psalm 139:13-14: For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.

So you beautiful and handsome people, get out there and show what the Lord has done and is preparing to do for you.  Great life ahead!

BEST is better than GOOD.

Most of the time, we are tempted to say YES to every opportunity that comes our way.  We reason by saying, “I can’t say pass on this, this might be the break that I have been waiting for.”  However, it is already too late when we realize that we’ve said YES to many good things and end up getting stressed and burned out.  Moral of the story? Not every open door is for us. We need to pause and pray until we have that peace in our hearts that really says “YES” to this.

I read one saying that says “I’ve got to say “NO” to the good so I can say “YES” to the best.

“We need to choose, and the choices we make will ultimately determine how successful we are in the eight crucial areas of life:  happiness, health, peace, prosperity, security, friendships, family, and hope.  It’s up to you to choose the best and pass up the good.” – Zig Ziglar.

THANK GOD IT’S MONDAY!

Monday is the most dreaded day for the working class.  But I declare – “let it not be this Monday and the Mondays to come!

If we see Mondays as our Goliath, then let us be the David that this Goliath needs.  Let us ready our sling and stone and be on our passion mode.  I like what Zig Ziglar said – The way you see yourself today will affect your performance today.

So, how do you see yourself today?  Why not say – THANK GOD IT’S MONDAY!

Remember: The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied. – Proverbs 13:4.

LA PARILLA, CAFE AND GRILL: A Baguio City cafe that embraced nature.

dex at la parilla
Don’t have time to go out of town to have an encounter with nature? Enjoy nature’s landscape at La Parilla Cafe and Grill.

During stressful weeks, I always look for a place where I can dine and relax and just forget about my busy city life. You may say that there are a lot of places with that kind of description here in Baguio and I will agree to that.  But I have a new discovery:  LA PARILLA CAFE AND GRILL, located at #68 Kisad Road, Baguio City – this cafe is so near the central business district yet the ambiance gives you a feel of being in a hidden and secluded mountain resort. You will not miss this if you are traversing Kisad Road because it is exactly where INN ROCIO & Restaurant is located.

Just look for this inviting facade along Kisad Road.

Well, I didn’t have to wait for me to be stressed but I decided to visit La Parilla Cafe and Grill because Bright Hope Room for Growth, Inc., a school that my wife and I founded, just concluded its school year 2014-2015 so that gave us a reason to celebrate.

As a treat to ourselves and our dedicated teachers, we chose La Parilla Cafe and Grill as part of our year-end luncheon. The place is so inviting and you will surely give in to selfie temptations while waiting for your order.  Here are some captured memories at La Parilla Grill and Cafe during our Bright Hope Room for Growth, Inc., Admin and Teachers’ Year-End Luncheon:

WHAT WE HAD:

ONION RINGS: the crunch and dip is a delight. A platter is enough to be shared by 4 to 6 people. Kasi nga appetizer lang. Pero kung yan ang ulam mo siyempre ibang usapan yun. Hehe. (Forgive the quality of the pic, di bale real life naman yan, no edits)
FRIES
FRIES: As part of the appetizer, the teachers also had fries and were discussing the difference between fresh french fries over fast food french fries. La Parilla of course serves fresh ones. Para ano pa at nasa Baguio tayo diba? Vegetables here at La Parilla Cafe and Grill are also as fresh as the morning dew.
POP CORN AND BREAD
HEAVY MEALL ADD-ONS: If you order heavy meals, you will be served bread and butter, pop corn, and soup while you wait for the main entrée.

OUTDOOR FUNCTION AREA: This space is good for very very intimate weddings, baby dedications, birthdays and other occasions. The place is very easy to decorate and convert into something that will suit your taste. Besides, wala nang kailangan i-decorate kasi as is e very elegant na siya. 🙂

The launching of La Parilla Cafe and Grill is a gift to the City of Baguio. It gives me another reason to say that I have made the right decision of staying here and building a career in this fast growing city.

Others make concrete jungles out of their properties but congratulations to the owners of La Parilla Cafe and Grill, I’m glad that you decided to embrace nature.

Again, food is great and I will surely keep coming back but not only because of the food but because of the calmness that the place brings to my soul. (Kasi if the price is right, kalma lang talaga ako.  Dito magugulat ka na quality na ang food at affordable pa ang price kaya – it is really calming to ones soul.)

If you plan to visit the place, just tell them you read about it from my blog and you’ll surely get…a smile from their friendly wait staff.

ProPER way to form a good habit.

good habits

“I am your constant companion. I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden. I will push you onward and upward or drag you down to failure. I am completely at your command. Ninety percent of things you do might just as well be turned over to me, and I will be able to do them quickly and correctly. I am easily managed, show me exactly how you want something done and after a few lessons I will do them automatically. I am the servant of all great people and, alas! of all failures as well. I am not a machine, though I work with all the precision of a machine, plus intelligence of a man. You can run me for profit or run me for ruin – it makes no difference to me. Take me, train me, be firm with me, and I will place the world at your feet. Be easy with me and I will destroy you. Who am I? I am habit.” – Author Unknown

Meriam-Webster dictionary defines habit as a usual way of behaving or something that a person does often in a regular and repeated way.

A lot of successful people reiterate the importance of forming good habits to achieve success and I could not agree more. The things that you do daily, define who you will be in the future. Let us say for instance that you make it a habit to wake up early in the morning and run several miles around the city, tendency is you will be enjoying the benefits of having a fit physique. That is a good example of a good habit. In contrast, if it is your habit to sip a glass of wine every other hour then the outcome of that habit could possibly be alcoholism.

Now we understand that our habits can make us or break us. Of course I will not waste your time reading about forming bad habits, instead, let me share to you 4 points that you can do to form good habits, I will call it the ProPER way to form a good habit.

First: Prompt.

In theater, we call someone who gives an actor the trigger or cue as the prompter. The same principle applies in forming good habits. We must first think about that particular habit that we want to acquire and prompt ourselves to start doing it. For example, if we want to form a good habit of waking up early every morning, our prompt could be an alarm. So the first thing that we need to do is to remind ourselves to set an alarm in the evening so that we can wake up early the next day.

Second: Perform.

After setting a prompt, we should make sure to do the very thing that we prompted ourselves to do. This is the perform part. So if we base it in the above example, if we set an alarm for us to wake up early in the morning then we should perform by immediately getting out of bed.

Third: Enjoy.

After successfully performing what you prompted yourself to do then it is time for you to enjoy its benefits which leads to having a sense of fulfillment.

Fourth: Repeat.

Repeat this over again until it becomes a habit. Time will come when you will no longer have to prompt yourself to perform because it has already become part of your system.

Apply the above principle every time you want to start a good habit and see how your life will change.

Challenge yourself now and follow the ProPER way to form good habits!
